Tweety is one of our dinky little girls with a cheeky personality and a side of shyness. She does however get over herself quite quickly. Tweety’s main love is her bed. She loves nothing more than fully stretching out in comfort and prefers to push her kennel mate into the corner or better yet, the floor! This works out well for her in the kennel due to retiring from a wrist issue. Although, it doesn’t seem to stop her bouncing around in happiness. She does need to be on restricted exercise for a good few months to ensure the wrist heals enough and so she doesn’t reinjure it during the healing period.

Whilst Tweety could not live with another breed of dog due to a high prey drive, she could live with a greyhound male and has the potential to live with a female greyhound. She has successfully shared space with both sexes during her time with us. Once she gets over her initial upset around sharing her beloved bed, she gets on fine with her kennel mates.

Tweety will need a home with a smaller garden or a sectioned off area in a larger garden to help her when on restricted exercise.

Pending successful introduction Tweety could live with children.

Tweety's passion is her bed. She loves to be sprawled out in the middle leaving little room for kennel mate Jack to share. Tweety does have a bit of a shy side to her but she doesn't take long to get over this. She is one of our smaller girls in the kennels and shows us her cheeky and bouncy personality.

She has just started going out on walks and so far is showing to be a good walker.

Jordy is new to the kennel and has already settled in well. From his first time out walking where he was jumpy with traffic, to his walks a few weeks in, you can see a noticeable change in confidence with traffic. You can also start to see his inquisitive side come out. He finds the horses that live in the fields close to the kennels fascinating. He is a brilliant walker on the lead with no pulling.

Jordy is a very people orientated boy and the first thing visitors notice with him is his waggy tail and friendly nature. He has been working his charm on everyone he meets to get extra head scratches and cuddles.

He is so chill in his kennel and loves making a nest out of his bedding. Of course we can never make his bed right so he has to do it himself! He always makes himself a pillow out of his bedding so once this boy is in a home I can see him being a cushion hog or demanding a head rest before he'll go to bed ��

The only bug bear with Jordy is that he is grumpy around other dogs with food or treats. Other than as puppies, Greyhounds have always been fed separately. This is so that their carers can monitor their food intake and any signs that they are feeling unwell if they don't eat their food. Jordy is not comfortable with dogs close whilst he is eating or when he has a treat. He will growl or bark as his way of saying 'Back off. I'm not comfortable with you being close.' He has shown no issues with humans being close whilst eating or when taking his bowl once he is done even if there is food left in the bowl.

Jordy could be homed with greyhound/dog savvy children. He is incredibly friendly but can show that affection by nibbling at your hand/fingers when he is not done having fusses.

He could live with a greyhound girl providing that adopters are aware that all food and treats must be given when the dogs are separate.

Mattie is one of our younger dogs at only two and a half years old. Although he comes across as really shy to start with, we finally won him over after nearly a month of being with us.

He was rather noise phobic when he arrived and the slightest sound would spook him to the corner of his bed. Now having had 3 months to settle, everything is not as scary. Mattie is still noise phobic in unfamiliar environments but given the chance of repeated exposure in an area he calms down. His noise phobia becomes no longer an issue once he's familiar with a new place.

Mattie has been going out for regular walks. Our volunteers have mentioned how he is a lovely walker but needs more confidence outside his comfort space. Also, with our dog walkers help, Mattie has overcome his worry with traffic. We have a very busy country lane so he has done well to improve around traffic after just a few walks. He recently went on the monthly Riverside Country Park walk and coped really well being around a large group of people, greyhounds and other breeds of dog that frequent the park.

Mattie can also be quite hand shy and a bit dramatic if you try to do something he doesn't want you to, like checking his tail. He recently broke/dislocated near the tip of his tail and after a vet check we needed to keep a close check on it. Whilst he wasn't happy about us looking he did grudgingly allow us to do a physical check.

Food will help him overcome a variety of things in a home as he is a big foodie - he will however need to be taught some manners regarding treats as he does have a habit of snatching.

He will need an adult only home in a quiet area as he still finds some traffic and unexpected noises unnerving. *

Mattie has been small dog tested so has the potential to live with another breed of dog pending successful introductions. Having a confident dog to live with will help him both inside and outside the home. When Princess was here he loved a game of chase up and down the fence line with her. Mattie is new to the kennel. He is a bit unsure at the moment and shies away from people that he doesn't know trying to handle him. He has improved in the time that he has been with us. Given a chance to settle into the kennel Mattie's confidence is slowly growing. He would benefit from a home with a greyhound girl or potentially other breed of dog already established in the home. Mattie has passed his small dog test and we have a video of him running around and playing with a small terrier.

At this time we wouldn't home him with young children purely on the way he is unsure around adults. We may find as he settles into the kennels that he is comfortable around children but at this time we can't confirm that.

Jack has some strikingly good looks, especially with his beautiful roman nose, dark brindle colouring and pointy ears. Jack has a large amount of enthusiasm with everything, he comes bouncing down the range every time he leaves his kennel, whether that’s feeding time, exercise in the paddocks, going out for a walk or meeting people. He has a mischievous personality making him the perfect partner in crime.

Since Jack arrived at Harvel, he has learnt a lot of lead manners from our brilliant regular dog walkers. Whilst he still needs more lead training, Jack is a firm favourite with the volunteers. He walks out the gates of the kennel with keen enthusiasm, but he soon calms down and will walk well with a loose lead. Jack will need to continue his socialisation around other breeds of dogs in a home as he’s still quite feisty and is working on polite greeting.

He has the best manners when sharing a kennel with a girl. He is very polite and loves to snuggle up to them on a chilly night even if they demand not to be touched! Jack could live with a female greyhound pending successful introductions or as a solo pet.

As Jack is quite friendly and affectionate, pending successful introductions, he could live with older children.

Jack has what we call a Roman Nose. It is not as obvious as some we have had but it gives him a bit more of a regal appearance. Jack is quite active and likes to be involved. He gets on well with kennel make Tweety despite her love of taking over the entire bed.

Jack can be strong on the lead to start as he's eager to be out and about.

31/03/2026 - Sarge has been returned to kennels after 4 months in a home. will update with more detail soon.

Sarge is a tall and long boy who doesn't quite understand his size. He has previously been kennelled by himself due to his size and a disagreement with a previous kennel mate. He is currently kennelled with Izi who is a quietly bossy female. So far the pairing has been working well and Izi is being very tolerate of his need to be close to her when in the kennel and Sarge is accepting of being told off when he pushes his luck a bit.

Sarge is overall a very friendly boy and loves to be fussed over. He still needs to learn some door manners as he's very enthusiastic about getting out of his kennel. Whether that is for food or exercise/toilet time, as soon as the door opens he likes to try and get out like a bullet. He is learning but its a slow process. Luckily kennel mate Izi shows great patience with him and waits for him to get out of the kennel before getting out of bed. We're hoping Izi's calm in the kennel will rub off on him!

Due to needing to gain a bit of weight after his castrate he has not been out walking with our dog walkers yet. We will update as he settles in.

Sarge will need a home with either carpet or rubber back carpet runners. He does not like wet, slippery floors or flooring that looks like it may be slippery.

Jasper is our silly shy youngster. At just over 1½ years old, he is rather boisterous around the kennel. He is unaware of his own height and length and typically will throw himself around when moving from one area of the kennels to another. Jasper is also our newest Spook* currently he fears anybody that he doesn’t know. He refuses to come out of his kennel if he hears a voice he doesn’t recognise. However, being young, he can be coaxed out of his kennel once unfamiliar visitors have left. If you ever arrive at the kennel and hear the staff doing silly voices calling ‘Jazzy’, that’s just us coaxing him out of bed when he is feeling unsure. Unlike our other spook Tanya, Jasper is not yet happy to spend time outside. He’s happy to go out for a toilet and food but once his business is finished, he wants to get back to the safety of his kennel. At not quite 2 years old there is time for Jasper to be able to overcome his fears with the help of a gentle but firm adopter. He just needs guidance and reassurance that everything is going to be fine.

Jasper would benefit from living with an older, confident and tolerant female greyhound to show him the ropes and help his self-confidence blossom. We will also consider a companion closer to his age if they are a confident and well-rounded female greyhound who is happy to live with a male who acts like a puppy when he’s not worried. He will need an adopter who understands spooks or who is an experienced dog owner that will give Jasper the time he needs to be comfortable in a new environment.

Due to his personality and his need for further time to settle in, he is not currently available for walking.

We will update with more information as he becomes braver around the kennel.

*Spook refers to idiopathic fear and withdrawal syndrome. It is a genetic/hereditary issue, it is not due to any bad experiences prior to coming into homing kennels. A Spook is basically a dog that is terrified of anything and anyone that they aren’t familiar with, and it can take a long time to gain a Spooks trust and to build a relationship. Building a relationship with them does happen but you are looking at a year or more to build that relationship and not a few weeks.

Amy has now been at Harvel for one year. She’s seen lots of her friends come and go (including four of her friends she came to Harvel with), wondering when it’s going to be her turn. Lots has happened for Amy in that time - she’s dealt with a toe stub removal (she arrived with a previous partial toe amputation), four tendonectomies on multiple toes on her front feet due to corns and most recently undergone sedation to find a foreign body in a different toe. She’s not had the best year for her feet. Whilst she is well known at the vets we use, she still absolutely loves going in the car and settles down impeccably. When at the vets she just makes herself comfortable on the mat until it’s her turn.

Amy has been on two outings to Trosley Country Park with dog walker Ken since her arrival. She loved the chance to explore the wooded park and take in all the different scents. She was very well behaved but shy around meeting new people and wasn’t too happy with the small children that wanted to say hello. Amy preferred the quieter walks around the park as she is not fond of noise or crowds of people. She is one of our easiest walkers as she’s a plodder, preferring to

walk at a slower pace to take in all the scenery. Due to her issues with her feet, she now wears boots on her front feet to make walks more comfortable for her. Amy is a great traveller, calm and unbothered by each journey she has taken.

Amy really is a sweet girl who has been through a lot this year. She hasn’t let anything get her down too much despite being in pain and discomfort for a fair part of the year. Through it all Amy’s personality hasn’t changed she is still a shy girl but calm personality. She has been a trooper and just got on with daily life whilst the servants ensure that her feet are taken care of.

Amy does not like to expend unnecessary energy, and you will most often find her sitting or laying in the paddock once she’s finished her business. Amy doesn’t care if the spot is comfy, sunny or dry, once she’s done, she’s going to park it until it’s time to come inside.

As she is a shy girl, Amy will be the one to choose her preferred owner. Some people worry her instantly and others she is fine from the first meeting. You can never tell with her, but she can be won over with food!

Amy could live with a male older greyhound who enjoys a quieter, calmer life at home.

Amy wouldn’t be able to live with children as the noise and activity worries her.

Amy is a bit of a chatterbox and wants to make sure that you know she is there. She has a calm personality and when outside likes to sit and watch the world go by. Amy walks well on the lead and is a good eater. She had a partial toe amputation on her rear paw due to a broken toe when racing. She is a sweet girl who gets on well with her current kennel mate Adam.

Amy cannot live with cats or small fluffies.

She has not been tested with other breeds of dog.

Unfortunately Fanta has found herself looking for a new home. She was returned through no fault of her own. Fanta is in need of a quiet home with no young children, would prefer being an only pet but will live with a quiet male. At Fanta's time of life she just wants someone to love her, feed her and and build special memories with her. Although she is getting on in years she is very spritely for her age, she is still very happy going out on her walks and enjoying the outdoors. She has so much love to give to her special person/family.

10 year old Fanta finds herself needing a new home. Due to a relationship breakdown her mum needs to find somewhere else to live. Unfortunately Fanta's mum hasn't been able to find affordable accommodation that will allow Fanta to continue to be a part of her life. She is absolutely devastated and heartbroken and it is a last resort for her to be parted from Fanta at this stage in her life. Fanta is a special girl who several years ago had to have her two middle toes removed on one foot. She has adapted well and although starting to show signs of arthritis - she is 10 after all! - she has boots to wear on her foot when she leaves the house. Fanta is looking for an Adult home as children worry her. She has lived as an only pet for the last 5 years and due to her being an older lady and the sensitivity with her foot due to the missing toes she would be best to be homed as an only pet. She is fully house trained and good on the lead. Fanta is looking for a quiet laid back life with a garden.

What her Mum says "Fanta is a wonderful dog, loving and gentle and she is no trouble at all. She has to be kept on a strict diet due to her foot injury, it’s important she doesn’t put on too much weight. She must always wear a boot on her front right foot on walks and in the garden. She can only have 20 mins walks due to her injury. She loves her walks and enjoys pottering around and sniffing. Her favourite things are eating and sleeping, with a few zoomies and mad moments in between. Fanta never has human food, only sardines and mackerel twice a week. She doesn’t counter surf but she would grab something if it was left within her reach. She doesn’t bother people when they are eating and will go and lay down when told. She does sleep on the furniture and my bed but only when I’m not in it. She gets off when told, she may try to prolong it but she is never aggressive. She doesn’t like shouting and likes a calm and quiet environment."

Dexey is a gorgeous girl with a big playful, fun personality. She loves nothing more than attention from any visitors in the kennel. She’s known for jumping up and trying to pull you back to her at the kennel door if you stop paying her attention. She is a nipper during playtime but it’s always gentle. She also has a nosey side so is always on and off her bed to see what is going on. When she’s not being nosey, she is taking her rest seriously usually behind a mountain of bedding.

Dexey will require a home with a smaller garden due to an old hock injury. She will only be able to have around 30 minutes of walks per day - much to her dismay as she would much prefer to go further. At home activities like puzzle games etc would be great to keep her busy. Any more exercise and she will require frequent rest days and pain relief when she starts showing signs of discomfort. Currently Dexey is on joint supplements in her meals, a magnetic Bio Flow collar

and pain relief when required. Dexey could live with a calmer male greyhound, so she doesn’t overdo any exercise with the hock or as a solo pet.

Most people don't get to see that under the seemingly petrified persona is our own little Mistress of Mischief and Mayhem. She'll sit on her bed shaking when visitors try to say hello but that is not the Biddy the staff know. She's crazy playful and cheeky, always ready to start a kerfuffle in the kennel with bed zoomies. Chanting ‘Biddy, Biddy, Biddy’ at her is always a way to set her in a playful mood. As an older girl of the kennel (5 years old) with a greying face, Biddy definitely isn’t one to act her age.

She can be a bit reluctant to go on walks with people. However, she can be encouraged to go out with our dog walkers but she's always a bit unsure on the way out and is eager to get back to bed when she returns to kennels. Biddy can be strong on the lead some days, other days she is calm to walk. You never know what you’re going to get with her but with a little bit of lead training, she would become a gentle wanderer.

Biddy would best suit an adult only home as noisy toys/children could be quite unsettling for her.

She could potentially live with a greyhound male given that she has plenty of space to move away from another dog - she’s not fond of sharing her bed. She also loves to do bed zoomies and the boys just get in her way!

She's also not a fan of sharing her food, even if she doesn't actually want it. This is easily managed by feeding in separate rooms and separating when giving long last treats. She has no issues with the humans in her life and food.

Biddy does still need socialising with other breeds of dog. Some dogs she finds offensive and others she can walk by with no issues.

Biddy will take time to get used to a new family and routine but she’s a girl worth taking a chance on.

As an older girl of the kennel with a slightly greying face, Biddy definitely isn’t one to act her age. She loves nothing more than a zoomie and playing games with staff.

She can be a bit reluctant to go on walks with new people. However, she can be encouraged to go out with our dog walkers but she's always a bit unsure on the way out and is eager to get back to bed when she returns to kennels. Biddy can be strong on the lead some days, other days she is calm to walk. You never know what you’re going to get with her but with a little bit of lead training, she would become a gentle wanderer.

Biddy would best suit an adult only home as noisy toys/children could be quite unsettling for her. She could potentially live with a greyhound male given that she has plenty of space to move away from another dog - she’s not fond of sharing her bed. She also loves to do bed zoomies and the boys just get in her way!

Biddy does still need socialising with other breeds of dog. Some dogs she finds offensive and others she can walk by with no issues.

November 2025

Little Miss Biddy, our shy crazy pants :) Biddy can be a little bit of a contradiction. With the staff she is playful, cheeky and demanding. When it comes to meeting new people she is shy, reserved and a bit reluctant to go on walks with them. She will go on walks with our dog walkers but she's always a bit unsure on the way out and is eager to get back to bed when she returns to kennels.

Biddy can live with a greyhound boy given more space than the kennel allows. However, in the kennel we have found that she much prefers to have her own space where she can do zoomies on her bed. The boys just get in her way and annoy her by taking up space.

Biddy still needs socialising with other breeds of dog and cannot live with cats.

Biddy would probably be best suited to an all adult household. She hasn't been around children much as far as we know and as she can be a bit shy around new people we would have to see how she interacts with children who visit the kennel before deciding whether a home with children is right for her.

After 4.5 years in a home, 11.5-year-old Annie has been returned to us. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties from her previous owners it has meant that Annie was returned to us in poor condition. Annie was diagnosed with a form of Lupus prior to homing and required on-going medication. On return to us we noticed immediately that her Lupus was having a major flare up and causing her a lot of pain and discomfort. She has been under the care of our vet since her return, and we are hopefully slowly getting her condition under control. Once the vets are satisfied that her Lupus is under control, Annie will also need a dental before she is ready for homing. At nearly 12 years old Annie will need to remain in our care at the kennels until the vet is happy with her health. She needs medications multiple times a day and regular monitoring by the staff so that we can inform the vets of any slight changes to her health. Once given the go-ahead from the vets we will be looking for a home that Annie can spend the last of her twilight years in. She will need to remain on medication for the rest of her life and deserves to spend it in the comfort and warmth of a home. For now she is happy and settled in her kennel and we are making her as comfortable as possible with lots of attention and lots of tasty food to keep her appetite up.

What sort of home are we looking for Annie?

As an older girl Annie is just looking for an easy life. She is looking for a home with garden access and ground level living. Due to her age, she doesn't do stairs and it is currently too painful on her feet for her to manage more than 1 or 2 steps as several of her toes are swollen due to the Lupus.

Annie has been great around visiting children and babies. She is OK with other breeds of dog and lived with the previous owner’s mums female Staffie for a year. She can be a bit nervous of dogs that she doesn't know but regular interactions will help her become more comfortable with them.

A typical girl she's not overly affectionate, preferring to stand in front of you to have a stroke and walking off back to bed once she's had enough. She previously slept downstairs at night without a fuss and is OK to be left alone. When going out the previous owners would usually leave the TV on for company and that works well for her. At the kennels she has a radio on overnight.

She was going for short walks a couple of times a week as she prefers eating, sleeping and garden time to walks. Once recovered from her Lupus flare up, I'm sure she can be encouraged to do a daily 5-10 minute slow wander but at her age it is always best to be guided by her. If she just wants to potter around the garden then she should be allowed to do that without any pressure for walks. Weight can always be maintained with portion control.

When she first went home 4.5 years ago she had sleep startle, however given time to settle that is no longer an issue. I mention it as a new home may cause Annie to regress and have some sleep startle whilst she settles.

Anyone interested in opening their home to Annie and allowing her to finish out her twilight years in a warm comfortable home rather than kennels please do get in touch. Please be aware that she is not currently ready for homing as we need to get her health to a point we are happy with first.

Dizzy is one of our long stay dogs having been back with us now for 587 days and counting. Dizzy originally came to us when he was 4 years old and will be turning 7 years old in May. He was with us around a year before he found a home. Alas that home only lasted a week due to Dizzy’s oddities.

In early 2025 he spent some time in foster care to see how he would cope if he had other greyhounds in the home. Dizzy has been back from his foster home for some time now. I’ve honestly been struggling with how best to pass on the information that has been passed on by his foster carers. Dizzy’s peculiarities make it a challenge to showcase his character and to highlight the daily trials Dizzy will face when in a home environment. What also makes it difficult is that Dizzy can tend to fixate on one person and can become inconsolable, fretting, stressing and vocalising if he can’t get to that person. Once that person is no longer around, he calms himself down, but if he knows they are near he wants to be close.

Things we have learnt from Dizzy’s time in foster:

• He needs to live with 1 or 2 female greyhounds. He doesn’t necessarily pay them any attention but needs the support of them being in the home and on walks.

• He is not a strict timekeeper. If mealtimes/getting up/bedtime are within an hour window of his normal time he doesn’t fret too much.

• House Training – good for the most part. Other than first morning wees he needs someone with him in the garden when he goes out to toilet. If something spooks him whilst out, he won’t toilet and needs time to calm down before trying again.

• Prone to weeing when he gets stressed – Fosters did their best to keep his stress levels low to minimise incidences.

• Usually did well on walks if he was walking with at least 1 of the greyhound girls. Was OK with walks if it was the same walk. Walking in new places really unsettles him especially if they are busy or something spooks him.

• Learned how to do stairs quite quickly.

• Mostly sleeps well but is an early riser and sleeps better if allowed to sleep in the same room as the humans.

• Showed no interest in toys but fosters were careful as they have 2 other dogs and Dizzy was new to the home.

• Food – No guarding issues but still fed away from other dogs. Had been eating 2 meals well. Suspicious of treats but accepting of them once he knows they’re nice ones.

• Garden – Foster’s had a securely fenced woodland type garden allowing for quieter areas outside. Loves the garden when its quiet and enjoys all the wildlife smells. Was used to going out multiple times a day accompanied by female foster carer. If he’s off lead in the garden and it is too scary, he won’t wee. Foster carer would put him on a lead and walk him down to a safer area so he could toilet before guiding him back inside.

• Separation issues - generally needs someone around nearly all the time. Can cope with fosters being in another area of the house but will go in search of them after a short time. When fosters have had to leave him, he takes himself either to his crate or to the office where male fosterer works. Office is safe and quiet with predictable noises. He does fret, wander and stress for 45mins-ish first but has managed to be left on occasions for 3 hours and has only wee’d inside if he’s not emptied his bladder before they’ve gone out.

• Mostly ignores other dogs on walks as he’s more concerned about where they are going on walks to initiate with other dogs.

• Okay with people if they are not too loud or going past on a bike

His foster carers found that noise** is Dizzy’s main problem. Everywhere is fine IF it is quiet and predictable. Sound of children, dogs barking, planes, garden machinery, will all put him off toileting in the garden. He can’t tolerate dramatic scary music – don’t blame him for that one! However, generally fine with the TV, Radio, doorbell and car alarms.

As we know from his time with us in the kennel and from his foster carers, Dizzy is a dog who struggles to relax. He only really whines once settled if he is worried or if its time for something. He initially barked at unfamiliar noises in the home, but this behaviour soon settled down. Dizzy likes routine and structure. Small changes and quiet noises he can adjust to quite well once he realises, they are not a problem. However, once he’s in-flight mode it takes him a while to calm down and he may do a stress wee. He’s not generally a cuddly dog but does like affection on his terms and does like to be close. Other than an initial couple of spats, the 2 greyhound girls he stayed with were ignored. The most attention he paid to them was following them into the garden of a morning, but he still needs to know they are there in the home or garden for confidence and reassurance. They found that he was more likely to go into fear mode when the male fosterer moved and made noises but on the other side of it finds comfort and safety in the male foster’s office and if he stays in his chair can make as much noise as he wants.

So that’s our Dizzy. He is a dog you just have to experience and be prepared to just take each day and each challenge as they come. He’s a dog with complex needs but mostly needs quiet, predictable routines with slow changes and someone around for most of the day. In the right circumstances and with an awful lot of patience and sensitivity he will thrive in a home.

May - 2024

Dizzy has spent a few days in a home environment. Unfortunately he found the experience very overwhelming. Dizzy would be best suited to a home with a retired couple who don't have the added pressure of working from home or working away from home. He will take time to settle into a home environment and is going to need a lot of patience and understanding to get him through those initial first few weeks. He has an anxious temperament which means any sort of change is difficult for him but he can overcome it with time and patience. Once back in the familiar kennel environment he calmed immediately and after a snooze settled straight back into the kennel routine. He may find it easier in a home to be restricted to one room with a strict but calm daily routine. For some dogs too much access to space is overwhelming. When he arrived at the kennels in June 2023 after an initial stressy first couple of weeks he settled down. We believe that Dizzy would benefit from being in a home environment but it is going to take a special someone to help him get through those first few weeks. He doesn't care about having another dog around, what he needs is his person/s who can ease him into homelife.

We realise that this may be a tall order to fill to find him a home. However, once settled in a home we feel he will be happier than in kennels.

December - 2023

Dizzy is as unique as each snowflake that falls in winter. There’s not really an easy way to describe him. He’s not keen on going for walks, he’s not fond of being out in the fields for more than a minute or two. He want’s a kennel mate but at the same time ignores them or gets a bit grumpy with them in his space. He is vocal and dramatic at mealtimes as well as when he’s been out the field too long (in his opinion). In a lot of ways Dizzy acts like a much younger more inexperienced dog. Despite him being a bit Meh about having a kennel mate, we think in a home environment he would benefit from having a stable and established Greyhound girl to guide him. This would hopefully make walks and outside time more enjoyable for him. Currently walk times are short as he is spooked by a lot of things even though we are semi-rural.

He does have an excellent pathetic face and is usually found sitting down leaning in the front corner of his kennel. His propensity to look hard done by wins him a lot of fuss and affectionate from visitors to the kennels. He is an affectionate dog and does seem to like human company and would prefer someone around most of the time, or at least until he has settled and is happier in his new environment.

The ideal home for Dizzy would probably be either a couple who are retired or a home with a couple of children with parent/s who work from home. This way he gets the human companionship that he likes whilst working with him on being left for short periods of time.

Dizzy cannot live with cats or other breeds of dog.

June - 2023

Although Dizzy is 4 he acts like a younger dog. Dizzy was born, raised and raced from the same kennel. Moving to a different kennel to find his forever home has been a bit of a challenge for him. Although a bit stressed with the change in environment, Dizzy picked up the kennel routine quickly and is starting to enjoy mealtimes now that he is used to the different food. Dizzy still hasn't quite worked out what treats are. He currently like smackos (or similar meaty strips) but only if they are broken into small pieces!

We really thought 2025 was going to be Wilson’s year. He had people interested in him at the end of the year and has been reserved twice. His first potential home fell through and unfortunately his most recent reservation the potential adopter fell ill. That potential adopter though is still hopeful of taking him on with her other hound when she’s feeling better. For now, he is back up for homing. Fingers crossed for him that this is his year.

Not much has really changed with Wilson since our last update. He is doing better with his reaction to other breeds of dogs and with his strength on the lead, thanks to the work our dog walkers have put in with him. Wilson will be turning 6 years old in March so he’s going to be hitting that sticky age where adopters would prefer a younger dog. 6yrs old is typically a sensible age and a good age to pick if you have children in the family. Although middle age for a greyhound they are usually much calmer and settled into their personalities.

The only other change for Wilson is that he has developed seasonal allergies in the Autumn. The allergies usually last for around a month effecting around his eyes, nose and occasionally his inner ear. However, usually a 2-week course of steroids for his face and a 10-day course of antibiotic ear drops for his ears usually sorts it out until the following Autumn. We’ve not yet worked out what causes the seasonal allergies but the medication he is given is inexpensive and only needs to be given for a short period of time.

When you partner his seasonal allergies together with a high prey drive, a tendency to be strong on the lead, his hock that causes him to limp restricting his exercise and then add in his high intelligence. It all leads to him being last on peoples list to look at. The cost of potential future vet bills due to his hock and allergies can be enough to put some people off even considering him.

Wilson is a very intelligent boy and as he is restricted on how long he can walk for (30 – 45 minutes max); he may be an ideal candidate for puzzle games to keep him busy or even teaching him how to talk with Dog Buttons for communication. He is quite cheeky and has taught himself how to open his kennel door to let himself out**. If he thinks he is missing out on a walk he jingles the catch - now kept on his door permanently- so that he’s not forgotten. Whilst he is a strong dog on the lead, he is one of our regular walkers’ favourites to take out.

Wilson is also quite playful so will suit a home with a greyhound girl to play with; he has been fantastic with the girls he has shared kennel space with. With his own breed he is quite an adaptable dog but could also live as an only pet. He is an incredibly friendly and gentle boy. He loves a fuss and has been very happy to meet young children (as young as two years old), so we think he’d be a lovely family pet. He travels well in the car so although walks will need to be shortened, he will happily travel to new places to investigate.

Wilson is a delight to have in the kennel. He is spotlessly clean and well mannered. He is a happy boy who loves everyone and has a cheeky side to him. Anyone would be lucky to have this boy in their home.

We would really love to see Wilson in a permanent home enjoying all the comforts that provides. We are aware that homing is generally slow UK wide and that large black dogs with Wilson’s quirks are difficult to home. We really believe that in the home Wilson is going to be one of the easiest dogs. Yes, there will be some outside challenges, but he is intelligent enough to learn with some guidance and support of his forever family.

Wilson (Mustang Highway) is one of our long stay dogs having been with the Trust since April 2023. First with Greyhound Trust Hall Green and since December 2023 with us at Greyhound Trust Harvel. In April 2025 it will be 2 years since he entered retirement kennels looking for his forever home. Wilson turns 5 years old in March so still a young dog but it gets him closer to that sticky age where adopters would prefer a younger dog so they can have longer with them.

He is an incredibly friendly and gentle boy. He loves a fuss and has been very happy to meet young children, so we think he’d be a lovely family pet. He travels well in the car so although walks will need to be shortened, he will happily travel to new places to investigate.

A volunteer from Greyhound Trust Hall Green recently bought him a K9 Dog bed for him to have with him in the kennels. Now he’s gotten used to his new bed he likes to snuggle in a corner with his pillow. The boy does like having a pillow to rest his head on!

We would really love to see Wilson in a home enjoying all the comforts that provides. We are aware that homing is generally slow UK wide and that large black dogs are the more difficult to home. Throw in Wilsons prey drive and uninsurable rear leg and we know people would prefer to look at easier options. We really believe in the home Wilson is going to be one of the easiest dogs. Yes, there will be some outside challenges, but he is intelligent enough to learn with some guidance and support of his forever family.

Ruby is one of our larger than average girls with an incredibly smart brain. Like Spartan, she is another one of our escape artists in the kennel. She loves nothing more than trying to figure out how to open locks, latches, bolts etc to take herself out for a midday wander when nobody is looking!

Ruby is a good walker on the lead, a big foodie, and an affectionate girl. She would ideally need to be homed in an adult only household unless older children are dog savvy and will be able to understand that front and rear entrance doors will need to be kept locked at all times*.

Ruby could live with a greyhound boy but can sometimes be fussy over who she likes. She will still need on-going socialisation with other breed of dog and is unable to live with cats.

Ruby is one of our bigger girls in the kennel. She's great on the lead but can be an enthusiastic hugger. Ruby is also one of our more intelligent girls. She knows how to open bolts, latches and how to open other doors to get her way to get out and have a mini adventure.

She is affectionate, playful and gets on well with her kennel mates. Due to her intelligence Ruby would be best suited to an all adult household or with dog savvy children who understand that external doors need to be kept locked.

Ruby cannot live with cats and has not been tested with other breeds of dog.

Malta is one of those dogs who will get a lot of attention due to his size, colour and pretty face. He is a lovely affectionate dog to his human friends but finds life in close proximity with other dogs quite overstimulating. He’s full of personality around the kennel and absolutely loves going for walks with his dog walkers - to the point that he excitedly runs down the range of the kennel and jumps into his walker’s arms. Whilst being a favourite with some of our regular dog walkers, when out on the lead, Malta is well mannered. Although, he can still get overstimulated if other breeds of dogs come too close causing him to become a bit lively.

Malta has improved on walks since he first arrived in September 2025 and is getting better with his reaction to seeing non-greyhounds. He doesn’t have any issue going on group walks with other greyhounds, he just doesn’t want to share his space with another.

Malta needs a pet free home with someone who will cherish him with all the love and affection he deserves whilst helping him learn how to behave on walks. Do you think you could welcome a solo dog like Malta into your life?

Malta is one of those dogs who will get a lot of attention due to his size, colour and pretty face. He is definitely all of those along with being affectionate with people.

Malta's downside is that for the most part he walks well on the lead … until he sees something. Unfortunately when he sees something whether that is another breed of dog, cat, squirrel or fox, he becomes a power on the lead. Malta is going to need an owner willing to work with him on his socialisation skills.

In the home he will make a lovely companion and will love being part of a family. It's his social skills around non greyhounds that will require work outside the home. Malta is intelligent so with guidance will soon learn how to be a pet.

Malta would be best suited as an only pet.

Let’s not beat around the bush with Spartan - he is an escape artist! He’s a smart boy who will find any gap to squeeze through given the chance whilst learning the ropes. Spartan will need an experienced adult only home as he finds changes quite stressful. Once he settled into a routine at the kennel, he calmed down, although this did take 2 months. That doesn’t stop us having to check his double locked into his kennel though!

Spartan’s favourite things in life are a comfy bed and food - he likes a strict routine at dinner time and will be happy to vocally announce dinner is late! Saying that, he will let you know when he expects to go out into the paddocks for some exercise - not always when he's next in line!

Spartan does need some lead work - he walks nicely but he can freeze when out and about. He will put the brakes on if you’re taking him on a route he doesn’t approve of or if he's going home too early. Our fabulous volunteers have been helping to try and improve his freezing on walks.

Don't let his flaws put you off though, as Spartan does have a lovely, sweet side to his personality whilst also being people orientated. He loves sharing a kennel with a girlie even if they don’t like him in return. All he wants is a friend to snuggle up to. Spartan is a fantastic boy who just wants somebody to take a chance on him and show him that not everything outside is so daunting.

Spartan would suit an adult only home with either a female greyhound for company or as a solo pet. Our preferred home would be with another greyhound as he walks better when out with others.

*Due to Spartan’s escape artist tendencies any potential adopter may be subject to a physical home visit as well as our virtual home visit and other pre-adoption checks.

I don't know how to sugar coat this so I'll just come out and say it. New boy Spartan is an escape artist. His clever brain is able to work out and find spaces he can squeeze through. He will need a very secure garden with no holes or gaps in fences. He's at his worst for looking to escape when he is stressed and in an unfamiliar environment. Given a few days to settle in the kennel he is no longer looking to escape out. However, we are still vigilant and we are giving him time to settle before sending him out walking. At the moment with him so new to the kennel we want to give him a bit of time before deciding what the best type of home for him would be. Right now it would need to be an all Adult home as children can't be trusted to make sure doors are securely shut whilst he settles.

We will update with better information once he has had more time to settle into his new space.

Shania is a very people oriented teeny tiny girl with a dinky little head. Whilst she does weigh close to 29kgs she is all muscle having only retired from racing a few months ago.

Shania is a hugger. We had a bit of difficulty getting her official website pictures as she was more interested in getting her hugs in than getting her picture taken. She's been out on a few walks now and whilst initially wary of the traffic she's gained confidence around it already. She's seen a few other breeds whilst on a walk at a distance and so far has ignored them. Hopefully that's a positive sign and with further introduction she may be able to live with other breeds of dog.

She is not the sharpest crayon in the box but once she has things figured out there is no stopping her. Our beds are higher than at her previous kennel and it took her a few days to figure out that she wasn't stuck once she was up there. We helped her along by removing the front of her bed to give her easy access. Now the bed is back together and she's an old pro about getting up and down. The moral of this is, don't give up on her if she initially finds things difficult. She will figure it out. It just takes her a little bit of time and guiding to get her there.

Shania can live with greyhound/dog savvy children - due to the hugging and would be find to live with a male greyhound.

Tilly is the oldest of our new dogs at 5 years old and the extra life experience really shows. She is confident and friendly with everyone she meets. She's an excellent walker and responds to her name when you want to get her focus. In her kennel she is completely chilled. She makes the most of her nest of bedding to take her morning, afternoon, mid-afternoon and evening naps. Napping is important for greyhounds don't you know? Its practically a sport! ��

When she isn't snoozing or resting her legs - standing up is boring - she is actively involved in what is going on. She'll trot out happily for walks, food, toilet breaks and to greet visitors to get her share of head scratches. When it's time to come in, she does happy dance tappy feet as you collect her. She really is the sweetest little girl.

She can be quite vocal if there are foxes around. She is confident in herself and has no problem giving a little growl to tell the naughty boys who yell at her to shut up. Despite what this sounds like she really is a polite well rounded girl. She's also another of our smaller girls at just over 26kgs when she finished racing.

Pending successful introduction she could live with children.

She hasn't been tested with other breeds of dog but would be find to live with a respectful greyhound boy. She's not a fan of overly enthusiastic young greyhounds.

Tanya is now 7 years old and is our longest stay dog. She has been with us since September 2022; that’s a whopping 1195 days and counting. Whilst we do get people ask about her from time to time, her biggest hang-up is that she is a ‘Spook’* and anything small that upsets her can set her back again for weeks. In September 2025, typically the day after she had officially been with us 3 yrs, she suffered another setback. This is something that we haven’t shared widely yet as she’s still in the initial treatment stages. Over the course of a day Tanya had several cluster seizures resulting in two emergency vet visits and an overnight stay for monitoring and initial treatment. She is currently being treated for Epilepsy and has just had her 3-month check. The outcome of her visit is that she needs to remain on the medicine for another 3 months (6mths total). If she remains seizure free, then at that point the vet will consider slowly reducing her dosage. So far, the tablets she is on are working and she luckily hasn’t suffered anymore seizures, but this is just another setback for her. The first week on her epilepsy medication she was clumsy on her feet and panicked whilst trying to do things at top speed. The scariest part for us was that she didn’t recognise the staff for those first few days which is not good for our Tanya, especially as this was combined with her unsteady on her feet and panicked. Currently she is stable on her medication which MUST be given 12hrs apart to be effective. She gets her medication at 8am and 8pm every day. Our chunky monkey is enjoying her late evening snack with her medication, although the snack is not good for her waistline! She has however lost 1kg in weight since her last check-up. Slow progress but progress.

Despite these setbacks she has vastly improved in a variety of ways since her first year with us. She trusts the staff but that trust still has its limits. The dirty looks we get after a nail clipping or when she must go to the vets for her check-ups. You usually get snubbed for at least half a day! She now allows some of our visitors/walkers to give her a fuss and a cheeky treat. With certain dog walkers she’ll demand treats when she sees them. She still barks at most strangers, but she is more comfortable walking passed them to go out to toilet, stretch her legs for a bit (or if there’s any sun, she’ll top up her tan) and walk past them to get back to her kennel.

This last year, Tanya will now wait at the kennel door every day when you put her back in to have a stroke and some head scratches and has turned into an affectionate dog with the staff. Since her seizures in September 2025, she has become playful in the mornings and evenings and initiates a game of chase in the paddock, followed by cuddles before bed and first thing in the mornings.

Tanya doesn’t go out for walks at all right now. She’d previously been fine going out on quiet days with staff. Currently she finds the prospect of leaving the kennel grounds a bit frightening and refuses to walk out the front gates. However, she is perfectly happy to have a mooch and a sunbathe out in our paddocks and have a wander on lead around our fields with one of the staff. When she is happy for a walk, she does like having the chance to stretch her legs and investigate new smells.

As a Spook, Tanya very much likes a strict routine and anything out of routine means she will plonk her backside in the corner of her bed and refuse to come out until we are back on schedule. Food is a big motivator for Tanya in making friends but if she doesn’t want to do anything no bribery will get her to move. She will need a calm and patient owner who can walk her in really quiet areas when she's ready and walk her on a harness plus collar/lead set. She will need a fully fence garden ideally over 6ft in height. When panicked Tanya can jump 6ft from standing. So far, she's not gone over our 6ft fences, but she is always monitored when in the paddocks.**

Tanya cannot live with children, cats, small animals, other breeds of dog or other greyhounds. She is best suited as an only pet in a quiet all adult household.

Realistically we know Tanya may spend her entire life in kennels. Despite what some people may think of the kennel environment, this is the place that Tanya feels safe to be herself, this is comfort for her. She has a steady routine and knows exactly what is expected of her and what to expect every day.

We do live in hope though that a special person will come along with the right home environment for her, a willingness to give her all the time and space that she needs to be comfortable away from where she feels safest.

**Due to Tanya’s temperament any potential adopter will be subject to a physical home visit as well as our virtual home visit and other pre-adoption checks. Tanya will need to go to a home local to the kennels only.

Tanya very much likes a routine. She likes knowing what to expect everyday and if we alter that routine, she can be quite stubborn. She will refuse to move from her bed until things are done in the order, she expects them to be. She can sometimes be convinced to do things out of order, but it does take some coaxing.

She has been introduced to toys and enjoyed having one to play with. Tanya is a foody, however taking treats from people she doesn’t know is still a struggle. She will happily take anything from the staff who she has got to know over the last year. With time and trust you may be able to use food as a motivator to help her get comfortable with new people.

Tanya is what we call a ‘Spook’. Spook refers to idiopathic fear and withdrawal syndrome. It is a genetic/hereditary issue, it is not due to any bad experiences prior to coming into homing kennels. A Spook is basically a dog that is terrified of anything and anyone that they aren’t familiar with, and it can take a long time to gain a Spooks trust and to build a relationship. Building a relationship with them does happen but you are looking at a year or more to build that relationship and not a few weeks.

Tanya has settled in well with the staff and will have a fuss and a play when she feels like it.
