Meet Skye — our gentle little worrier who just needs a friend to help her shine

Skye is a sweet, sensitive girl who looks older than her years due to her worried expression. She can be anxious when meeting new people, but this doesn’t stop her from enjoying her walks. Her tail may be tucked and she may not show it outwardly, but she does like to explore and sniff.

She recently visited Trosley Country Park with one of our long time volunteers. She was reluctant to get in and out of the car, but with time she began to relax and showed curiosity toward other dogs. When she met an ex Harvel greyhound, her whole body language changed — she was noticeably happier walking alongside another hound.

Skye currently shares her kennel with another greyhound, Missy (F). They get along well aside from the usual “girls sharing a bed” disagreements. Skye often takes the lead and can be found standing protectively over Missy.

Skye would benefit greatly from living with another greyhound or calm dog to help build her confidence. She could live with a male or female greyhound but has not yet been tested with other breeds. She cannot live with cats. Due to her reserved nature, she would be best suited to a home with teenagers rather than younger children

Kennel 09 - Sponsored In Memory of Pat Thompson. A Lady Who Loved Her Greys.

Pet name - Mattie

Race name - Donegel Mattie

Colour - Black

Sex - Male

Born - 9th July 2023

Arrival date - 18th November 2025

March 2026

Mattie is one of our younger dogs at only two and a half years old. Although he comes across as really shy to start with, we finally won him over after nearly a month of being with us.

He was rather noise phobic when he arrived and the slightest sound would spook him to the corner of his bed. Now having had 3 months to settle, everything is not as scary. Mattie is still noise phobic in unfamiliar environments but given the chance of repeated exposure in an area he calms down. His noise phobia becomes no longer an issue once he's familiar with a new place.

Mattie has been going out for regular walks. Our volunteers have mentioned how he is a lovely walker but needs more confidence outside his comfort space. Also, with our dog walkers help, Mattie has overcome his worry with traffic. We have a very busy country lane so he has done well to improve around traffic after just a few walks. He recently went on the monthly Riverside Country Park walk and coped really well being around a large group of people, greyhounds and other breeds of dog that frequent the park.

Mattie can also be quite hand shy and a bit dramatic if you try to do something he doesn't want you to, like checking his tail. He recently broke/dislocated near the tip of his tail and after a vet check we needed to keep a close check on it. Whilst he wasn't happy about us looking he did grudgingly allow us to do a physical check.

Food will help him overcome a variety of things in a home as he is a big foodie - he will however need to be taught some manners regarding treats as he does have a habit of snatching.

He will need an adult only home in a quiet area as he still finds some traffic and unexpected noises unnerving. *

Mattie has been small dog tested so has the potential to live with another breed of dog pending successful introductions. Having a confident dog to live with will help him both inside and outside the home. When Princess was here he loved a game of chase up and down the fence line with her. See comments for video of Mattie playing with a small breed dog.

*Due to Mattie’s noise phobia any potential adopter may be subject to a physical home visit as well as our virtual home visit and other pre-adoption checks.

November 2025

Mattie is new to the kennel. He is a bit unsure at the moment and shies away from people that he doesn't know trying to handle him. He has improved in the time that he has been with us. Given a chance to settle into the kennel Mattie's confidence is slowly growing. He would benefit from a home with a greyhound girl or potentially other breed of dog already established in the home. Mattie has passed his small dog test and we have a video of him running around and playing with a small terrier.

At this time we wouldn't home him with young children purely on the way he is unsure around adults. We may find as he settles into the kennels that he is comfortable around children but at this time we can't confirm that.

Sarge — Big, Sensitive, Loving, and Looking for His Perfect Match

Sarge is a tall, long limbed lad with a gentle heart and a goofy streak. After four months in a home, he has returned to kennels simply because he wasn’t the right fit for a busy household with children. He’s a big boy with very little awareness of his size, and when he gets excited he can be boisterous and enthusiastic — far too much for little humans.

Despite this, Sarge showed some wonderful qualities in the home. He was clean indoors, settled when left for up to six hours, and generally good on the lead, though he can become strong when something catches his interest. He struggled with narrow pavements and busy roads, and he displayed some guarding behaviours (growling) toward certain male visitors and once toward a visiting child. Growling is a dog’s polite way of saying “I’m uncomfortable,” and it’s unclear whether this was stress related or part of how he copes in a home environment.

Back in kennels, Sarge has shown none of these behaviours. Staff can enter his kennel freely, fuss him, make his bed, and move around him without issue. He greets visitors politely through the open bar kennel gates and is affectionate, friendly, and engaged with volunteers — most of whom are men.

Out and about Sarge enjoys his walks and has visited the local park with an experienced volunteer. He was friendly, enthusiastic, and loved meeting people — though his size and excitement were a bit overwhelming for some small children. He can be very strong on the lead, so he’ll need an adopter with strong arms and a willingness to continue his training. The good news? He responds well when handled consistently.

His Personality - Sarge is a big, enthusiastic, slightly chaotic sweetheart who:

• Loves fuss and attention

• Gets excited about going out

• Has very little spatial awareness

• Needs help learning manners

• Curls himself into the tiniest ball when resting

• Is affectionate, friendly, and eager to please

He’s previously been kennelled alone due to his size, but he thrives on human interaction.

The Home Sarge Needs - Sarge will thrive in a calm, structured, adult only home that understands his size, sensitivity, and need for space.

He needs:

• An adult only home

• A calm, spacious environment

• Carpet or rubber backed runners (he dislikes slippery floors)

• A dedicated “safe space” such as a puppy pen area with his bed, toys, and water

• Someone confident and physically capable of handling a strong dog

• Continued socialisation with other breeds

• No cats

His safe space is important — it gives him a clear boundary where visitors know to leave him alone, and where he can retreat if he feels overwhelmed.

Bowen – The Sweet Boy With a Secret Cheeky Streak

Bowen is a lovely, friendly lad with a quietly mischievous side that peeks out once he feels comfortable. Although he’s been with us since the end of April, he’s one of those gentle souls who is simply present — happy to greet visitors, enjoy a stroll, and share his space with his current kennel mate, Dolcie.

Bowen retired in February and, like many newly retired racers, he’s discovering that stamina for longer walks is very different from short racing bursts. He loves going out each day, but at the moment he finds a 30 minute walk quite tiring, especially in warmer weather (anything over 15°C). He’s an expert at cooling off in front of a fan and will happily settle there until he’s comfortable again.

His new home will need someone patient and understanding who can start slowly with his exercise and gradually build up his endurance over time.

Bowen is not a fan of slippery floors. Homes with laminate, tile, vinyl, or hardwood will need to add non slip rugs or runners to help him move around safely and confidently.

• Bowen could happily live with a female greyhound, and he’s recently started showing a playful side with Dolcie.

• He cannot live with cats.

• He will need ongoing socialisation with dogs of all breeds and sizes to help him continue building confidence.

Most people don't get to see that under the seemingly petrified persona is our own little Mistress of Mischief and Mayhem. She'll sit on her bed shaking when visitors try to say hello but that is not the Biddy the staff know. She's crazy playful and cheeky, always ready to start a kerfuffle in the kennel with bed zoomies. Chanting ‘Biddy, Biddy, Biddy’ at her is always a way to set her in a playful mood. As an older girl of the kennel (5 years old) with a greying face, Biddy definitely isn’t one to act her age.

She can be a bit reluctant to go on walks with people. However, she can be encouraged to go out with our dog walkers but she's always a bit unsure on the way out and is eager to get back to bed when she returns to kennels. Biddy can be strong on the lead some days, other days she is calm to walk. You never know what you’re going to get with her but with a little bit of lead training, she would become a gentle wanderer.

Biddy would best suit an adult only home as noisy toys/children could be quite unsettling for her.

She could potentially live with a greyhound male given that she has plenty of space to move away from another dog - she’s not fond of sharing her bed. She also loves to do bed zoomies and the boys just get in her way!

She's also not a fan of sharing her food, even if she doesn't actually want it. This is easily managed by feeding in separate rooms and separating when giving long last treats. She has no issues with the humans in her life and food.

Biddy does still need socialising with other breeds of dog. Some dogs she finds offensive and others she can walk by with no issues.

Biddy will take time to get used to a new family and routine but she’s a girl worth taking a chance on.

January 2026

Little Miss Biddy, our shy crazy pants :) Biddy can be a little bit of a contradiction. With the staff she is playful, cheeky and demanding. Chanting ‘Biddy, Biddy, Biddy’ at her will always set her in a playful mood. Biddy will be a ball of fun once she gets over her silly shy side with new people. As an older girl of the kennel with a slightly greying face, Biddy definitely isn’t one to act her age. She loves nothing more than a zoomie and playing games with staff.

She will go on walks with our dog walkers but she's always a bit unsure on the way out and is eager to get back to bed when she returns to kennels.

Biddy can live with a greyhound boy given more space than the kennel allows. However, in the kennel we have found that she much prefers to have her own space where she can do zoomies on her bed. The boys just get in her way and annoy her by taking up space.

Biddy still needs socialising with other breeds of dog and cannot live with cats.

Biddy would probably be best suited to an all adult household. She hasn't been around children much as far as we know and as she can be a bit shy around new people we would have to see how she interacts with children who visit the kennel before deciding whether a home with children is right for her.

Wilf is brand new to the kennels — and he’s very much a baby. He has just turned 2 years old and is letting us know exactly how overwhelmed he feels by all the recent changes. Despite this, he’s already adapting quickly and will continue to settle with the right routine, reassurance, and gentle guidance.

Wilf retired from racing after only a few trials; he simply wasn’t suited to the racing life and is now ready to learn what home life is all about.

Wilf would really benefit from living with an older female greyhound who can help him settle, show him the ropes, and give him confidence in a new environment. He’s young, impressionable, inquisitive, and eager to bond — he just needs a steady role model.

Overall Wilf is a sweet, curious youngster who’s still figuring out the world. With patience, routine, and a calm older female companion, he’ll blossom into a lovely, settled boy.

Meet Sandy - Reserved at First, Playful at Heart

Sandy is initially a little reserved, but once she’s settled she becomes playful, sweet, and engaging. She enjoys attention and interaction, especially once she trusts her environment.

She travelled well on a recent trip to the country park — a great sign for future adventures. Sandy was strong on the lead in the busy, stimulating environment with lots of dogs around. In familiar, quieter settings (like her kennel walks), her lead manners are much better, showing she can walk nicely once she’s comfortable and not overwhelmed.

Around non greyhound breeds she becomes animated and over interested, indicating she needs:

o Continued, structured socialisation

o Controlled exposure to dogs of different sizes and shapes

o An adopter willing to work on calm behaviour around other breeds

Sandy could live with a docile male greyhound. She Cannot live with cats or other breeds of dog. She would suit a home committed to ongoing socialisation and training

Overall Sandy is a lovely, affectionate girl with a lot of potential. Her excitement around other breeds isn’t unusual for a greyhound coming straight from a kennel environment — it’s something that improves with patient, positive exposure. Her good behaviour with children, her ability to settle once she knows a routine, and her sweet, playful nature make her a really promising companion for the right home.

Luna – A Little Star With Many Sides

Luna is one of those greyhounds who reveals herself in layers. She's the greyhound equivalent of a mystery box — you never know which version you’re getting until she trusts you! With the people she knows, she’s playful, silly, vocal, affectionate and a wonderfully nutty goofy whirlwind. With new people and in unfamiliar environments, she becomes cautious and observant, preferring to take things at her own pace. Her videos really are the best way to appreciate her full personality — from her goofy play sessions to her gentle interactions with familiar handlers, and even her impressive “singing” voice.

Luna is a true mixed bag in the loveliest way. When she’s relaxed and with people she trusts, she’s mad-as-a-hatter playful and full of fun. She becomes very vocal when she knows food is coming, yet around unfamiliar people she can be reserved and needs time and gentle introductions. Out on walks she can be skittish, especially with traffic in the lanes, but once she knows her routine she settles into a chilled, content rhythm. She’s been with us at Harvel a little longer than some of the others, which has given us the chance to understand her beautifully. She has a charming “dressage pony” prance on the lead, and she may keep her distance from new walkers until she feels safe. A calm, patient adopter will help her confidence grow steadily.

Luna has had rare episodes of exercise-induced collapse in the past. These were infrequent and closely monitored, but it’s important that her new family tailors her exercise, avoids over-excitement during play, and learns her early signs so they can manage her activity appropriately. She’s also sensitive to loud weather; a recent mini-thunderstorm made it clear that thunder is not her favourite thing, so firework season may require extra support and a quiet, safe space.

When it comes to other dogs, Luna can live with a male greyhound and may also be able to live with a polite female, as she shared paddock time with one at her racing kennel. She does like her own space and isn’t keen on sharing beds, though she will tolerate it if the other dog is respectful. She hasn’t had much exposure to other breeds yet, so she’ll need further socialisation in that area.

Luna isn’t suitable for homes with children under eight, as the noise and unpredictability would be overwhelming for her. She may be able to live with older, dog-savvy children who understand the importance of giving her space while she settles into home life.

Out on walks, Luna is still building her confidence. Traffic can worry her, and she may prefer quieter routes while she adjusts. With familiar handlers she relaxes, but with new people she may keep her distance until she feels safe.

Once Luna trusts you, she becomes a wonderfully playful, quirky and affectionate girl who will make you laugh every single day. She’s expressive, entertaining, sensitive and full of character. She’ll thrive in a calm, understanding home that celebrates her individuality and gives her the time she needs to shine.

January 2026

Ruby is one of our larger than average girls with an incredibly smart brain. Like Spartan, she is another one of our escape artists in the kennel. She loves nothing more than trying to figure out how to open locks, latches, bolts etc to take herself out for a midday wander when nobody is looking!

Ruby is a good walker on the lead, a big foodie, and an affectionate girl. She would ideally need to be homed in an adult only household unless older children are dog savvy and will be able to understand that front and rear entrance doors will need to be kept locked at all times*.

Ruby could live with a greyhound boy but can sometimes be fussy over who she likes. She will still need on-going socialisation with other breed of dog and is unable to live with cats.

*Due to Ruby’s escape artist tendencies any potential adopter may be subject to a physical home visit as well as our virtual home visit and other pre-adoption checks.

November 2025

Ruby is one of our bigger girls in the kennel. She's great on the lead but can be an enthusiastic hugger. Ruby is also one of our more intelligent girls. She knows how to open bolts, latches and how to open other doors to get her way to get out and have a mini adventure.

She is affectionate, playful and gets on well with her kennel mates. Due to her intelligence Ruby would be best suited to an all adult household or with dog savvy children who understand that external doors need to be kept locked.

Ruby cannot live with cats and has not been tested with other breeds of dog.

January 2026

Tanya is now 7 years old and is our longest stay dog. She has been with us since September 2022; that’s a whopping 1195 days and counting. Whilst we do get people ask about her from time to time, her biggest hang-up is that she is a ‘Spook’* and anything small that upsets her can set her back again for weeks. In September 2025, typically the day after she had officially been with us 3 yrs, she suffered another setback. This is something that we haven’t shared widely yet as she’s still in the initial treatment stages. Over the course of a day Tanya had several cluster seizures resulting in two emergency vet visits and an overnight stay for monitoring and initial treatment. She is currently being treated for Epilepsy and has just had her 3-month check. The outcome of her visit is that she needs to remain on the medicine for another 3 months (6mths total). If she remains seizure free, then at that point the vet will consider slowly reducing her dosage. So far, the tablets she is on are working and she luckily hasn’t suffered anymore seizures, but this is just another setback for her. The first week on her epilepsy medication she was clumsy on her feet and panicked whilst trying to do things at top speed. The scariest part for us was that she didn’t recognise the staff for those first few days which is not good for our Tanya, especially as this was combined with her unsteady on her feet and panicked. Currently she is stable on her medication which MUST be given 12hrs apart to be effective. She gets her medication at 8am and 8pm every day. Our chunky monkey is enjoying her late evening snack with her medication, although the snack is not good for her waistline! She has however lost 1kg in weight since her last check-up. Slow progress but progress.

Despite these setbacks she has vastly improved in a variety of ways since her first year with us. She trusts the staff but that trust still has its limits. The dirty looks we get after a nail clipping or when she must go to the vets for her check-ups. You usually get snubbed for at least half a day! She now allows some of our visitors/walkers to give her a fuss and a cheeky treat. With certain dog walkers she’ll demand treats when she sees them. She still barks at most strangers, but she is more comfortable walking passed them to go out to toilet, stretch her legs for a bit (or if there’s any sun, she’ll top up her tan) and walk past them to get back to her kennel.

This last year, Tanya will now wait at the kennel door every day when you put her back in to have a stroke and some head scratches and has turned into an affectionate dog with the staff. Since her seizures in September 2025, she has become playful in the mornings and evenings and initiates a game of chase in the paddock, followed by cuddles before bed and first thing in the mornings.

Tanya doesn’t go out for walks at all right now. She’d previously been fine going out on quiet days with staff. Currently she finds the prospect of leaving the kennel grounds a bit frightening and refuses to walk out the front gates. However, she is perfectly happy to have a mooch and a sunbathe out in our paddocks and have a wander on lead around our fields with one of the staff. When she is happy for a walk, she does like having the chance to stretch her legs and investigate new smells.

As a Spook, Tanya very much likes a strict routine and anything out of routine means she will plonk her backside in the corner of her bed and refuse to come out until we are back on schedule. Food is a big motivator for Tanya in making friends but if she doesn’t want to do anything no bribery will get her to move. She will need a calm and patient owner who can walk her in really quiet areas when she's ready and walk her on a harness plus collar/lead set. She will need a fully fence garden ideally over 6ft in height. When panicked Tanya can jump 6ft from standing. So far, she's not gone over our 6ft fences, but she is always monitored when in the paddocks.**

Tanya cannot live with children, cats, small animals, other breeds of dog or other greyhounds. She is best suited as an only pet in a quiet all adult household.

Realistically we know Tanya may spend her entire life in kennels. Despite what some people may think of the kennel environment, this is the place that Tanya feels safe to be herself, this is comfort for her. She has a steady routine and knows exactly what is expected of her and what to expect every day.

We do live in hope though that a special person will come along with the right home environment for her, a willingness to give her all the time and space that she needs to be comfortable away from where she feels safest.

*Spook refers to idiopathic fear and withdrawal syndrome. It is a genetic/hereditary issue, it is not due to any bad experiences prior to coming into homing kennels. A Spook is basically a dog that is terrified of anything and anyone that they aren’t familiar with, and it can take a long time to gain a Spooks trust and to build a relationship. Building a relationship with them does happen but you are looking at a year or more to build that relationship and not a few weeks.

**Due to Tanya’s temperament any potential adopter will be subject to a physical home visit as well as our virtual home visit and other pre-adoption checks. Tanya will need to go to a home local to the kennels only.

June 2024

Tanya is one of our longest stay dogs having been with us for 624 days and counting. She is what we call a ‘Spook’* and has taken time to settle into the kennel and get used to the staff. As a Spook, Tanya very much likes routine and anything out of routine means she will plonk her backside in the corner of her bed and refuse to come out until we are back on schedule. She has come a long way with the staff in the 21 months that we have had her. She trusts the staff but that trusts has its limits.

Tanya will now wait at the kennel door every day when you put her back in to have a stroke and some head scratches and has turned into an affectionate dog with the staff. Although she is happy for the staff to move her around the kennel, she can be easily spooked by people she doesn't know. Despite what it sounds like she has grown in confidence since she joined us and will now walk -quickly- pass strangers and will even take treats from them. Food is a big motivator for Tanya in making friends. With time and trust you may be able to use food as a motivator to help her get comfortable with new people.

Tanya doesn’t go out for walks as much as we would like her too as she finds the prospect of leaving the kennel grounds a bit frightening. It really is hit and miss with walking and sometimes she will go months without a walk. However, she is perfectly happy to have a mooch and a sunbathe out in our paddocks and have a wander on lead around our fields with one of the staff. When she is happy for a walk she does like having the chance to stretch her legs and investigate new smells.

Is there someone out there that can give Tanya the time, patience and routine that she needs to be happy?

December 2023

Tanya is what we call a ‘Spook’*, she has settled in well with the staff and will have a fuss and a play when she feels like it. She will now wait at the kennel door every day when you put her back in to have a stroke and some head scratches. Although she is happy for the staff to move her around the kennel, she can be easily spooked by people she doesn't know. Tanya has grown in confidence a little since she joined us a year ago and will now sometimes walk -quickly- pass the odd strangers. Tanya spends time in our enclosed outside pens, but some days are better than others. Sometimes she can be outside for a while having a sniff and a mooch. Other days she is barely outside long enough for a toilet. There unfortunately is no rhyme or reason to why on some days she spends longer outside than others.

Tanya very much likes a routine. She likes knowing what to expect everyday and if we alter that routine, she can be quite stubborn. She will refuse to move from her bed until things are done in the order, she expects them to be. She can sometimes be convinced to do things out of order, but it does take some coaxing.

She has been introduced to toys and enjoyed having one to play with. Tanya is a foody, however taking treats from people she doesn’t know is still a struggle. She will happily take anything from the staff who she has got to know over the last year. With time and trust you may be able to use food as a motivator to help her get comfortable with new people.

Tanya doesn’t go out for walks as much as we would like her too as she finds the prospect of leaving the kennel grounds a bit frightening. Once the staff get her beyond the kennel gates, she does like having the chance to stretch her legs and investigate new smells.

Tanya has recently started going out on walks with the kennel staff. Tanya did so well when out and about, she enjoyed getting in new sniffs and getting a chance to stretch her legs.
